A favorite place and meal

A prelude to the next travel story: I spent 3 weeks some years ago in Dusseldorf, actually in Neuss, a small community across the Rhine, consulting with a group of primary investigators on a project for a big pharma.

One of the docs, a real scamp.....






...took me to his favorite place, night after night.





We went in the early evenings, it was crowded every time.





They served one beer, and one beer only. They brewed it on the premise...

It was excellent. See the marks on the coaster? the X and I? That's how they keep track for billing purposes at the end of the evening. Sometimes the marks would encircle the coaster.......

There was a ample menu, but I only ever, in the multiple visits, had one thing. The Schweinhaxe:





A parboiled then grilled pig shank, served on a bed of kraut with potatoes on the side. It was heaven.

    1. Oh, it was darker than light amber. Dunkelweissen would be to your liking over there probably, but this place was a 'brewpub' and only served it's own stuff.

  3. I suppose three weeks of grilled, parboiled pig shank can't be that bad. Sort of like Easter every day.

    1. Didn't say every day, just every time I went there. Dusseldorf has a great Italian place, and I even had good sushi once.

  4. I would love it being genetically predisposed to good German cooking.
    As to bier I took 30 students to Germany in the mid nineties and learned most places served only on brand with two choices weisse und dunkel. I preferred dunkel ten and weisse now especially























    I like the look of it already being genetically predisposed to German cooking. I like dunkel then and weisse now especlly Leninkugels Honey Weisse from Chippewa Fall Wisconsin. :)

    1. The German beirs tend to be very good, but rather uniform. They actually have laws about what can go into beer (wheat, hops, water). I like the beers of Italy and Belgium just as well, also some of the 'microbeers' of the US.

    1. With food and beer like that, not much to be gloomy about. There were a few heated discussions though, after several beers with the group of pulmonologists, about the nazi era......they would bemoan what he did, the horrid things, then there'd come the "But...." that's when I'd start being rather snarky.

  6. We loved Germany when we were there . . the food and the beer. SWMBO especially liked the very secure bathroom doors!

  7. I wouldn't have guessed that was sauerkraut. I always thought it was white. Looks good. Doesn't particularly sound good, but looks yummy!

    1. I miss the markets, with fish and meats one doesn't see on this side of the pond, like rabbit, and 15 different kinds of fresh sausage.
