  1. Not sure if previous comment got thru but will re-send quote: "Winter is icumen in, Lhude sing Goddamm, Raineth drop and staineth slop, And how the wind doth ramm!"--Ezra Pound

    1. Sing Godamm....yeah, got it right there, his original words. Not that I'd expect less from you.

  2. Snowline is supposed to be ten-thousand for us somewhere around Thursday night to Friday morning. Denver may get its first frost. I might have to cover my 'maters and harvest my basil a day early.

  4. It's happening here, too. we were 37F at 2000 elevation. IF we had 5000 the rain would have been snow. Glad it wasn't.

    1. I expect it'll happen soon enough. I don't have the same anticipation of the first snow as I did when a youth.

  5. It snowed and snowed, the whole world over,
Snow swept the world from end to end.

    A candle burned.

Sorry I had to opt for Pasternak since Pound was taken.

    1. The Russians are such an odd people, eh? Maybe that was what it took to live through their history. He had his ups and downs as I remember, and the Stalinists and Stalin didn't care for him one bit.

I visited Tolstoy's grave once, years ago. An unmarked grave, actually a mound of earth with some leaves and new flowers. One got a sense of the Russian stoicism and patience.

    2. From what I understand, Stalin didn't like anybody.

Last winter I read Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward for the first time and re-read One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I'm not ready for the Gulag, but these I'd highly recommend. Tolstoy was a marvel.
