  1. He looks more enthusiastic in his gesture than do you, Mike. Were you nursing a tequila hangover? Or, is that you with the raised comrade salute?

    :-)

  2. I remember Mexico was pounded by some devastating hurricanes that year and various socialist parties were unifying under PSUM to get a more responsive government in such emergencies. Busy time.

    1. I remember the Mexican soldiers with M-16's on the beach, we saw no real signs of unrest. It was around the time the bottom dropped out of the Mexican economy, the exchange rate was huge. My hotel room in Mulage was around 6 US bucks.

  4. Some of the neatest pictures I have scanned were taken by the kids with their little 110's. Good job, young lady.

    1. Actually the camera was a Nikon, with a 50mm lens. We were a bit of photography geeks back then.

    1. The people who camped down there were at the beaches on bahia de le conceptione, a large bay off the sea of cortez. It was grad school days, two buddies and I and my oldest daugter drove a '71 Chevy Caprice down there, spent a month. Kate, then 6 on the first year, had been in a spanish-intensive program for the 2nd grade and was pretty good in conversational spanish. Early in our stay in Mulege she met some kids her age, and started going to school at the local elementary. Within a week she was fluent in local dialect.
It was great fun, those days.

  7. Were you a communist? I joined the Communist Party a long time ago, but got thrown own for being a bourgeois reactionary.

    1. Would you? I wouldn't...I know my younger self, far too well. I knew what he thought back then, and he didn't know jack.

One can't go back in time, slap the earlier selves around, talk some sense in them. But the unintended consequences thing......maybe I wouldn't have the great kids and grandkids. Anyway, bit of a Sci Fi trangression here.
