Unfortunate fire

A little over a block away from my home is a restored Queen Anne style Victorian house. Built in 1880, it was home to some noteable Buttians over the decades.

I has four fireplaces, 14 cut and stained class windows, bays, tower and sumptious woodwork inside.

Alas, it burned yesterday. The renovation had only been finished a year ago with a gourmet kitchen. I was only in the house twice, but it was a marvel of century old elegance.

No word as to the cause; the mom and girl were home when it started but got out safely. I'm sure the insurance will compensate them, but the home will be impossible to replace.

  1. That is a crying shame! I love those old Victorian homes. I would not want to maintain one, but I do love them. Cape May on the Jersey shore has them on every block, and it is more fun to sightsee them then to go to the ocean.

    1. Yeah, I love to sail on wooden sailboats, but having owned one, that was enough. Get the same effect by standing clothed in a cold shower tearing up Franklin's....

  2. Lucky no one hurt. How sad though. We had several similar looking homes in the neighborhood where I grew up in St Paul & even bigger ones on Summit Ave. where J.J. HILL & the other robber barons lived...

    1. Several of the ones on the historical register here were built by the mining version of the robber barons.

  5. That is very sad, indeed. I remember learning a long time ago that there was very little stained glass seen in old homes west of the Mississippi because the transport was so difficult.

    1. Well, there's a lot of old stained glass in San Francisco. I dunno, Butte made a lot of the stuff used there in buildings, but stained glass would be a stretch, I agree.

  6. Catching up - you've been posting pretty frequently again! I liked the old photos, especially.

  8. Wat. You live on a block? You're Genial from the Block? I've been under the impression, all this time, that you lived on a ranch ten miles from the nearest neighbor. Where do I get this stuff? Whenever I pass an old house in the middle of a big field I always think, "I wonder how Mike's doing". Now I'll think of you whenever I see Jennifer Lopez. Jenny. From the Block.
