The next 4 days are supposed to be sub-zero, down to -33 on Sunday. The ice will continue to thicken on the surface, but underneath it's flowing water, and has no place to go except downstream and upward, pushing the ice surface, causing fractures in the ice, and ice heaves.
In a month or so, it could look like this (taken a previous winter).
Now I know why the Susquehanna buckles in hard winters. I didn't know the process until your post. Thanks, Mike.
ReplyDeleteHope you and the truck engine stay warm enough.
It started, albeit with a cough or two. Must be age, but I'm feeling the cold this winter.
ReplyDeleteTake care, Martha
Quite dramatic pictures there. And people think Minnesota is cold. It's been several decades since we seen temps in the minus thirty range though we do live in the "banana belt" of southern Minnesota. Only minus 12 here last night....:)
ReplyDeleteGenerally the winters here are about the same as your neck of the woods, TB. They just start earlier and last longer.
DeleteExplain to me again how this is a good thing?
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's a concept I'm struggling with this year. Looking forward to getting someplace warmer in a week or so.
DeleteThanks for the nice comment on my Gophs making it to a bowl. I won't demean the accomplishments of their season but a bowl. Well yes but the last time they made it to a real bowl, like the Rose Bowl, I was a junior at the University. That would be 1962. I think only the Chicago Cubs making it to a world series would be longer....
ReplyDeleteI'd be wary of success....look what it did to the Ducks. They had a 10-2 season, and two players publicly said the 'Rose Bowl would be a disappointment'.... they got their wish, they didn't get it. Seems they turn into spoiled brats, at least at Oregon. They've lost my support.
DeleteI'm not even going to mention the weather down here in Baja Georgia except to say that the only ice around here is in the martini shaker.
