The creek did rise

Spring runoff is in full swing. This is the Big Hole river about 25 miles from here.

  1. Refreshing photo. I do miss scenes like these! Here in California, house cats are still wading across Folsom Lake.

    1. I've read parts of the Sierra Nevada mts and the Cascades in Norcal have less than 10% of normal snowpack.

  2. The odd things I most clearly remember the wind in that wide open valley above the canyon. So on future trip I bought a nine foot rod...:)

    1. The pic is just downstream of the canyon, and yes, the wind can be daunting in the afternoon.

  3. Is it flowing too fast for the fish? How do they keep from being washed downstream? I'm guessing they turn to face the flow and wiggle like crazy to stay in place. Used to live near the White River in Arkansas many, many years ago. I remember what the runoff was like there - treacherous, sometimes.

    1. The fish seek slower moving water, near banks and in eddy's. About the only time fish seek fast water is late in summer, when the water temps are higher. It can be dangerous, particularly for people who have no white water experience in a boat.

  4. Impressive. We are getting the symphony of river rocks being ground smooth along with the rushing water.

    Careful with the fishing, neh?

    1. With the river at this stage my fishing is limited to finding a quiet eddy, and tossing a fly from the shore. I like the way this annual event changes the river, sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically. It's like the changes that happen to people when something similar happens.

  5. I wish that river was heading this way.
It looks like a great place.
