A Post in Two Parts

Why watching a Anthony Bourdain show on Rome isn't a good idea before having dinner.

Last evening was a football evening, I was going to watch my Ducks in their yearly dismantling of the Huskies, so I needed a easy-to-cook dinner. Some linguini from a package, a jar of marinara sauce with garlic and peppers added. Perfectly adequate. Then, while waiting for the game to start I played a episode of "No Reservations", it was on Rome. As you're aware, it's mostly about eating. The pasta and various Rome specialties. When I got my dinner and looked at it, I could only sigh at the ordinary looking plate of pasta.

Rome

So I got out the folder of pictures taken when my daughter and I were there last, just to re-capture the feeling.

  1. Every time I see that show he's in Asia eating bugs. Rome sounds much better.

    1. You sure you're not thinking of that weird foods show, with A. Zimmer-something?
Every Italian city deserves at least a week, some more. A year there would be about right.
If you've never had real, Italian pizza, in Italy, a simple Margherita, you've never had pizza. It's the food of the gods. The stuff here, particularly from places like Domino's isn't in the same universe.

  2. Ah to be in the Forum once again. I'd close my eyes and imagine. Ok maybe it was a scene from one of those Roman epic movies but still not the hordes of tourists around me rushing thru and only briefly stopping to take a photo. I love my three days there even beside the fact I had some thirty high school students with me....:)

    1. You could drive there in a long day, John. Well, maybe not, a day to Dover, then the ferry in the morning and a long drive.

  5. I recommend a plane or ship if you're going east of Boston, Pearl.

  6. Oh now I get it, but I have to agree with what Josh said....I only see him eating gross stuff, too, or passed out by a pool in Mexico. I've seen that one several times, actually. I like that one. Pearl, you were in Boston and didn't stop to visit me? Dang girl. We could of had some fun.

  7. Isn’t Anthony Bourdain cool? I really like his shows, and his books too. He reminds me of my cousin in France, she is also a gourmet cook (and her maiden name was Bourdain and she kind of looks like him too.)
You asked if I was an historian? Not at all, I studied languages in school. Actually English is my 3rd language (studied also Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese but can only speak my original language, French, well, and my 2nd one, Italian pretty much too.)

    1. I like his shows in most cases, they can be a little over the top, but pretty entertaining.

  8. Beautiful and intriguing photos, Mike, but the ruins appear in bad need of repair. In this country the owners could never get them insured.

    1. They are very, very careful and slow in their restoration, if that's even the word. Also the Italian gov't has their money woes. The excavations I saw going on were by hand, small areas.

    1. Italy is such a contrast with Germany, esp. driving. Orderly, good drivers, vs. anarchy.

  10. Why is it the Italians can build a stadium that lasts 1500 years and we can't build one that lasts much more than a generation or two? Even spending a billion or so to do it?

    1. Absolutely. I've never understood those who went to Paris, or wherever, and went to mcdonalds. I've always sought out something on the menu I've never had before.
