Last day until June

Last day of the Farmer's Market, I should say. It runs during the summer, featuring local produce and the other things one sees at these things.....handcrafts, etc. It's our only opportunity to get really fresh produce and fruit. Odd that city-dwellers like Seattle can get quality vegs year round, while country bumpkins like us have basically 2-3 months.

In the later months, August, this guy brings the melons he grows, Dixon melons. Sort of like a cantaloupe, but much, much better.

The best produce is at the Hmong farmers from over by Missoula. They came here in the 70's, during the turbulence post VN war era.

So I was up at 6 this morning for the mandatory 2 cups of coffee and read the newspapers about my miserable ducks of Oregon's football team. It's 31 outside, a nice fall day.

This is looking east from town, up at the aspens on the hillside.

Have a good weekend.

  1. I like farmer's markets when they actually have produce and aren't glorified craft fairs. The ones around here ended after Labor Day.

I have been giggling at your recent blog descriptions...

    1. Me too. Ours is pretty typical, more than half of ours is the not PC term of 'grannie arts'. But we have some good stuff from the locals in season.
Heh...yeah, been having fun with that.

  2. I know those melons; they are wonderful. Our farmer's markets are done, too, but then so are the crops, except punkins and squash. How do you have melons on 31 degree mornings?

    1. The pic and melons were from near a month ago. The Hmong farmers place is at a lower altitude by 2K feet. Their growing season is longer.

    1. That's the hope locally....the 'good mining jobs' will come back. About as likely as finding gold in my yard this week when I plant new bulbs.

  4. Sorry about your Ducks and somewhat amazed that our Wildcats beat them. Again.

    1. Eh, been watching the ducks lately, I was astounded when they were ranked 2nd. Their defense is nil, and the O line is nothing. My hope for the season is Mariotta escapes without injury, and goes on to a stellar career.

  5. Halifax has a year round indoor farmer's market that tends more toward being a food court and craft show most of the year. The real one is held on the grounds of the nearby hospital every Friday throughout the growing season. They've packed up for the year here too.

Hey, that reminds me of one of our favorite things seen this summer - a group of 8-9 nurses who had a drum circle going out there after they ate their lunch.

  6. Nurses...drum circle. I'll accept that medicine has changed, and is changing. But....I want to question each and every one of them to see if they can put in a central line, or do an arterial cannulation. If they can fine, drum away.

    1. Dear FGiM:

I've asked Santa to bring you a drum, one of those huge Japanese drums. That way you can drum away your frustrations, develop better shoulder strength for fly-fishing, and - maybe, just maybe - have a moving spiritual experience at the same time. I mean, we already know you can start a central line and do an arterial cannulation, but it sounds as if you could use some uplifting of mood. Just sayin'.

Everything okay on the home front?

Trust you (as the brits say). Yeah, maybe I could. It's just one of those things, times. Next year I move back to the Puget Sound area perhaps. Seems like taking up the rocking chair.

Perhaps the worst is seeing skills erode, things you once knew fade. The thing is that no, I wouldn't probe confidently for a vena cave for the central line, nor the brachial for the artery. Maybe if I did an intubation I'd see the cords and put it in quickly, buy maybe not.
I see all this, it's ok. I'm not like Rocky Marciano, learning that the then Clay had won the title, wanted to start training again.
It's just that it's hard, giving it up, even if it's already gone.

  8. Because of where we live, there are farmer's markets all year. We went to an excellent one yesterday, in San Luis Obispo (CA). There are over a hundred vendors there and there were only a couple "crafts" type stalls there. The rest were either produce from local farmers, dairies, etc. There were also probably 25 different food vendors. Most based on local produce. The street that the market is located on, is also where many restaurants in town are located. I LOVE seeing chefs perusing and buying produce for that day's menu, at the same place we bought ours. With all that produce there, you would think my dinner would revolve around what we bought. Nope! I ate a large and amazing BBQ tri-tip sandwich for five bucks!
