Thanksgiving

In Seattle for a bit, seeing the kids and grands,  and a few old colleagues in the medical world.

Emily, for some reason, had never cooked a turkey before......,though she has hosted more than a couple thanksgiving get-to-gathers. Well, this year she did, used the brining process and all. Here's the result, with gravy and mashed attending.

I hope you and yours had a good time.

    1. Yep. I had dark meat turkey and gravy for breakfast, stuffing and gravy for lunch. Dinner is undecided, but will include pie for sure.

  3. Oh, damn, maybe I can convince SWMBO that we need to do a turkey breast Sunday.

    1. I know I'm in the minority here in America, but I think the breast meat of the turkey is the least worthy of it's parts. It's got the least flavor, dries out the easiest, and compared to the thigh, meat from the drumstick and wings and back, has is lacking in appeal.
Again, I know I'm in the minority. Since the yoga pants, lycra suits and the like came into popularity, kale and the like are the rule. But I'll take the dark meat any time.

  4. I think that's a lovely feast, especially the mashed potatoes and the gravy. I know I'm in the minority here in America, but I think turkey is best left to everyone else. Don't like the taste, except for the great gravy. I remember separating the meat from the neck bones. It took forever. Good job, Emily and all the cookerers.

  5. I know that I am also in the minority, but the pumpkin pie is my most favorite part of the meal.

    1. We've converted to squash pie, same seasonings, but double the amount. particularly the ginger.

  6. And to you and yours as well, Mike. My brides first attempt at cooking a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving required a phone call to her best friend which required the answer to the question "which end do I stuff." Needless to say ever after her friend called on Thanksgiving to remind my spouse how to do it...:)

    1. My girls still call me on occasion to ask for cooking advise, I rather think it's a complimentary call, to let the old guy think he's still needed.

  8. Yes it's all good though my bride cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the first time for my parents was caught calling a girlfriend asking which end of the turkey to stuff....

  9. Hi Mike! I totally agree with you about the breast. Even if it's moist, it's my least favorite part of the turkey. However, I'd eat a baseball glove with that gravy on it!
The whole meal is always about the gravy for me. I put it on everything. We make tons of gravy and also freeze some of it, and also the drippings. Okay, I'm officially hungry. I'm going to thaw some leftovers, and dig in again. Hope all is good with you.

    1. I too am a fan of gravy....for years the kids wouldn't eat it if I told them it was giblet gravy....I started blending the neck meat, giblets and liver to a paste, they never knew.
