Earthquakes are no fun --even at a distance. When the Loma Prieta quake hit San Francisco in '89, I was in climbing gear, cabling and trimming a eucalyptus 30 feet up. Fortunately, I cabled it first, or I might have followed its split trunk one way or another. I also have a fear of heights. On reading your post I immediately thought of Judith Krantz's "I'll take Manhattan", but I recall having a fear of that too.
