Clearing skies, my school, re-purposed.

It rained off and on last night, which cleared the skies somewhat. For the first time in a couple weeks the mountains only a mile or two away were visible, and one's eyes didn't burn just from being outside.

My old school or You can go home again, and it's even better

My elementary school, St. Francis around 1953, I'm at the very far right, my sister is way off to the left side.

My school now:

I can now have a beer in the same general vicinity that surly nuns whacked my knuckles. Perhaps time does heal all wounds, eh?

  1. Glad the smokey air has cleared somewhat. I think serving beer in elementary schools is a great improvement. What did the teachers' union have to give up to negotiate that?

    1. Oh, I think now the things unions have to do is sign something like the McCarthy pledge.

  2. I hope that was enough rain to put the fires out. Very scary stuff.

Is that the school where Sr. Mary Elephant taught? McMenamins is way more preferable.

btw: I came across this wonderful photo essay of the transformation of Seattle at the turn of the last century. Your daughter might enjoy it too.

    1. Cheech and Chong, reference, right?? Thanks, sent that on to Kate. I had noticed it too, but hadn't passed it along.

  4. Glad you are getting a little break from the smoke. Sadly, my elementary school burned in the 80s, but it was built in the era of yours and had a similar two story look.

  5. I'm sensing a theme. This is the second blog I've read with dramatic cloud pictures and I have several waiting to be posted one of these days.

    Great improvement at the school!

  7. Being inside the school must be a weird experience today envisioning the history. Glad the smoke has stopped.

    1. It was odd, but they've changed the inside as to be unrecognizable.

  8. I love how McMenamins takes old institutions like schools and hotels and repurpose them. Wish we had more of that sort of thing in Fresno. We are known for tearing it down and starting from scratch.

    1. I've been through Fresno a couple times, can't say it's a favorite of mine. Yes, The brothers McMenamins are on to a good thing. I think the first was in Portland.

  9. Fires in Montana – years ago I visited my daughter who had an apartment in Helena for the summer while doing her master’s thesis for Johns Hopkins U on American Indian women health on the reservations. About a week after I arrived we walked up the hill near her apartment and could see huge flames in the distance and a lot of smoke – it was scary.

    1. This summer was one of the worst years for fires I've seen up here. Thanks for stopping by.
