Road trip and Spring in Montana

My friend L. is visiting from her home in Orange County, I thought I'd take her someplace she'd not seen before: the Ovando area and valley.  I'd not counted on the fact it's early spring here, and sometimes there is this thing called 'weather'. Here's some pictures from the trip:

The town square in Ovando, population maybe 50

Our hotel...we were the only guests. The owners left at 5, we had the hotel to ourselves.

A nearby ranch

The Blackfoot River, the one Norman McLean wrote about in "A River Runs Trough It"

A good trip, except we couldn't see more than a half mile in any direction because of the snow....when we got back to Butte there was 8" new on the sidewalk.

    1. I'll let you know when it gets here. Yeah, the hotel is great.

  2. You mean to say even Doc and Miss Kitty left the hotel? I hope the bar was left open for you.

It seems to me your friend got a great sampling of early springtime in the mountains.

    1. Yep. If only she had been able to see them. We never had visibility more than a half mile, usually less.

    1. Just a little later, like the winters are just a bit earlier. June snows are not uncommon here.

  4. One of my favorite books is "A River Runs Through It. I have read it a few times and also watch the movie every time I see if on TV. I took up flyfishing because of it and spent many years standing in the water trying to get that perfect cast.

You are very fortunate to live in a beautiful part of our country.

    1. I remember the year Redford made that movie.....the next summer the rivers were full of people with expensive equipment flailing the water, scaring the fish. Two years later there were some real bargains to be had in slightly used fly rods and equipment.

  5. Aaarrrrrggggghhhhh! Spring in Montana. Looks like spring in North Dakota, where my nephew-in-law spent 24 hours trapped in a semi in a blizzard this week. Aaarrrrrggggghhhhh!

    1. Yeah, people who are spending their first winter here start asking about now when spring comes......'late May, maybe....' is the answer. Back they go to CA.

    1. Very comfy on the inside, beds were queen size and very comfortable. The Blackfoot is a good river, floated it a few times.

    1. They were a nice couple, about our age. Left us the keys, showed us where the heat controls, coffee, snacks etc were, and off to their home about 4 miles away. He was back plowing the town square at 6:30am.

  8. Well, it's spring here too and the sand gnats are out... I'd take a little snow except that the tomatoes are already in.

  9. Outside tomatoes pretty hard to do here with our 50 day growing season.

  10. That looks like a very interesting place no matter the weather...better if it was warmer. Certainly good to put on the bucket list.

    1. You got three months that are possibly without snow...June is one and unsure. July pretty sure, August is good until the last week, but then can shift on ya'.

  11. The owners left at 5. Now that's funny.

    2. Happened to us in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, in February. Had the place all to ourselves. Very quiet.

  12. Ah, springtime at last. Birds chirping, trees sprouting leaves, tulips exploding. Snow and ice? What a dirty trick.
